Honeymoons are very awesome.
Here’s a picture of Mallory and myself as we enjoy ours in Cancún, Mexico.
.We decided to spend a week living the tropical life at an all-inclusive resort Live Aqua Beach Resort) and it was probably my favorite vacation ever.
It was both of our first times experiencing the all-inclusive life, and although it was a dream, it honestly took some time to get used to living the dream.
We arrived Saturday evening. After unpacking and settling in, we decided to have our first meal at the Italian restaurant on the resort.
We were seated, given menus, and began perusing.
The waiter approaches our table to take our orders.
As people who are typically budget-conscious and try not to overeat, Mallory ordered one bowl of the Pappardelle Carbonara, and I ordered the Ravioli Di Spinaci.
Let’s take a quick pause, that seems like a normal order right?
Here’s how the conversation went.
Waiter: “What else for you guys?”
Us: “Oh no, that’s all. Thank you!”
Waiter: ”Uh… are you sure?”
Us: “Yeah… I think so?”
Waiter: “Are you sure that’s it?”
Us: “Um, yeah?”
As the waiter walked away, Mallory and I looked at each other, both wildly confused.
Then, the food arrived.
The carbonara and the ravioli: very tasty
The portion size: very small
We quickly realized that when these menu’s stated first course, second course, and third course, they meant it.
It was such a weird and foreign feeling realizing you can get whatever you want, whenever you want it, without having to pay (yes, we paid for the resort, but you know what I mean).
It definitely took some adjusting. And once adjusted, I found myself ordering things for the sake of ordering.
This made me reflect on the concept of self-control.
When there are no limits, your self-control gets put to the test.
Without the usual factors of time, money, physical activity, etc. How self-controlled are you? Will you stand tall? Or will you crumble?
Food for thought. (I tried to make an all-inclusive joke here but couldn’t think of anything")
What I’m Watching
Directed by Michael Mann, starring Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx
A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles. (IMDB)
Out of respect of Michael Mann—one of my favorite directors—I figured it was right to watch Collateral on our flight to Cancún as a freshly married man.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the film Born on the Fourth of July, where I claimed that it was Cruise at his absolute best. While I still stand by that take, this might be my favorite Cruise movie.
Collateral has everything you want in an action thriller: great acting, an awesome main character, really cool set-pieces, a sick shootout scene, crazy looking Mark Ruffalo, and so much more.
What stood out to me on this watch was the cinematography and the color palette crafted by Mann. This was one of the first major movies to use digital cameras, which allowed the city of LA to come alive in a really amazing way.
One of my favorite scenes that displays this so well is when Cruise and Foxx randomly encounter a wild coyote crossing the street. Look at the colors of the city lights, the shaky handheld camera, and the reflective stillness of Cruise & Foxx. Beautiful stuff.
4.5 out of 5 Stars
Recommendation of the Week
To stay on the honeymoon theme, it would be irresponsible for me to not share this information with you.
To book our honeymoon, we used Costco Travel and I can’t recommend it enough.
When booking through Costco, they will book your flights, hotels, and transportations in a very easy process.
They always have crazy deals for destinations all over the world and you should absolutely check it out.
Thanks for checking out The Rabbit’s Foot this week!
Don’t forget to subscribe and share with a friend.
Soli Deo Gloria!
Wow, didn't see that being a take on self-control. I love it. Ryan Holiday in Discipline is Destiny talks about forming environments where self-control isn't necessary. He claims that no one is truly self-controlled when the restraints are released. The people we see as self-disciplined are just the ones who set themselves up well in environments that don't make them constantly say no. Sounds like the all-inclusive cruise would be tough for a recovering-glutton haha.
Also, great Costco shoutout. Excited to take a look for our next vacation.
